Rohit Bal is among the top fashion designers in India and a legend whose flamboyant style transpires designs like no other. Rohit Bal was born in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India. The history student from St. Stephens College shifted gears when he decided to pursue fashion design from the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Delhi. In 1986, Rohit Bal and his brother Rajiv Bal set up an export company Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd. In 1990, Rohit Bal launched an eponymous designer label with his first independent collection that got him noticed in the high fashion corridors. From then to date, he has ruled the fashion industry and spread his designer abilities and business capabilities to other ventures in India and overseas.

Rohit Bal, the designer, combines the right mix of history, folklore, village craft, and dying arts to create imaginative and innovative masterpieces for catwalks and fashion talks. Here are a few of them: -Bal was chosen by the Khadi Gram Udyog, a Government enterprise, to make Indian khadi internationally appealing.His collections have made it to the most prestigious fashion shows in Paris, New York, London, Singapore, Moscow, Jakarta, Colombo, Sao Paulo, Munich, Geneva, and all major cities in India. 

He has opened several stores in India, the Middle East, and Europe to be closer to his high-profile clientele.Collaborates with international lifestyle stores like Conran Store, Crate and Barrel, and Anthropology to lend his signature designs and style to their space.In 2008, he joined hands with diamond jewellery manufacturer Kirtilal Jewellers to mark his foray into jewellery designing. His first collection Jewelled Garden- the Lotus Collection, launched at Hotel Imperial, Delhi, was a total sell-out.A year later, he entered into a partnership with the international cosmetic giant Lancôme to launch a bridal make-up range specially meant for Indian skin tones.Since 2015, Rohit Bal shares a close creative partnership with international shoe designer Christian Louboutin.Has designed costumes for the Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Rohit Bal was also the brand ambassador for Chivas Regal. He has even forged alliances with other renowned brands like Rolls Royce, Reid & Taylor, Omega, Tag Heuer, Mitsubishi for Outlander, Ege Carpets of Denmark, Oriflame, Aditya Birla Group Linen Club, and others.Rohit Bal launched his first restaurant Ved, in New Delhi in 2006. The majestic Haveli-like ambiance also serves equally delicious Indian food. Conde Naste Traveller included this restaurant in its Top 100 restaurants in the World. Since then, Rohit Bal galloped on with his success as a restaurateur to open four more restaurants. When asked about his achievements Rohit Bal proudly says, “These collaborations are not limited to me being a public face of the brand. It involves utilising my ideas to create a certain look for the product.” Rohit Bal has also won several awards, such as Lakme Grand Finale Designer (2012), Indian Fashion Awards Designer of the year (2006), International Fashion Awards Designer of the Year (2004, 2001), and Kingfisher Designer of the Year (2001) among several others. His collections have featured in prestigious magazines like Vogue, Harper Bazaar, ELLE, Verve, and Marie Claire.

Theatricality is Rohit Bal’s middle name. The maverick designer is known to take anything in the sphere of design up a notch. His creative modern sensibility with a deep respect for tradition and sustainable ethics has helped him carve more than a niche for himself.
